Hawaii's state bird is a threatened species and is considered the rarest goose in the world. Reintroduction efforts and good management are helping the increase population. Kilauea Point NWR was the location of the first reintroduction efforts on Kaua'i in the 1900's and the population on the refuge has grown steadily. With its striking black and white plumage and farrowed neck. The Nene is an emblem of resilience. Nene can be found on all three refuges of the Kauai National Wildlife Refuges and across Kaua'i.
