The Hawaiian nēnē is endemic to Hawaii and is considered the rarest goose in the world. Designated as Hawaii's state bird, re-introduction efforts, coupled with good management practices on the refuge and throughout the islands, are helping to increase the population. Kīlauea Point NWR was one of the first re-introduction locations in the 1990s and their numbers have grown steadily on the refuge and elsewhere since that time. Visitors to the Point are regularly treated to up-close views of nēnē and, even to goslings during the breeding season. Nēnē resides on all three of Kauai's National Refuges.
